"Travelers" is the third episode of Season Two of The Man in the High Castle, and the thirteenth episode of the series overall. This episode, along with the rest of the season, was made available for streaming on Amazon Video on December 16th, 2016.
Synopsis[]
Fighting to acclimatize to the strange new world of Nazi New York, Juliana seeks out the one person she thinks she can trust: Joe Blake. Angry and defiant after Juliana's departure, Frank is drawn to the Resistance movement and its charismatic leader. Joe confronts his own identity when he finally meets his father.
Plot[]
Dr. Adler visits John Smith, urging him to end the life of his son, Thomas, before his incurable illness worsens. John pleads to Adler for more time, but Adler is unwilling to withhold Thomas's diagnosis, and can only guarantee him one more day before Reich officials discover his condition.
Frank plans to set up his workstation at the antique store of a reluctant Childan. Frank chooses to forge two cuff-links that Abraham Lincoln wore during the day of his assassination in order to pay off their debt to the Yakuza. Frank heads to his home to retrieve more of his tools, but finds that the Kempeitai have confiscated all of his possessions. He crosses paths with Lemuel Washington and demands to know Juliana's fate. Lem takes him to meet Gary Connell, who reveals to him that Juliana betrayed them by letting Joe Blake free and has defected to the Greater Nazi Reich at New York. Gary tries to sympathize with Frank of his frustrations over the system but Frank refuses to join their cause and leaves. Intrigued, Gary has Lem observe Frank.
Juliana learns she has to undergo a thorough medical examination to find out if she qualifies as an Aryan. Afterwards, she is taken to an empty room to be questioned by Sturmbannführer Erich Raeder about his affiliations and relationship with the Resistance and Joe Blake respectively. Erich then has Juliana write a detailed account of everyone she knew since the death of Trudy Walker while unaware of being observed by John. When finished, John finally enters and learns of the Resistance members Juliana identified, but she lies about who shot her. Despite a poor evaluation and demands from the Kempeitai of her immediate return, John overrides protocol and grants her asylum in the Reich. He sponsors Juliana's new life in the Reich, having given her the alias Julia Mills. Helen Smith helps her get settled on a dormitory for unmarried women and subsequently invites her to visit their home. Juliana lives up to her new identity by cutting her hair short and gets dressed to try and find Joe herself in New York. She heads to a given address but is confronted with his ex-girlfriend, Rita Pearce, who tells her that Joe left for Berlin. A heartbroken Juliana prepares to leave and Rita offers her sympathies.
Chief Inspector Kido makes an unannounced visit to Anne and Arnold Walker in their home. Kido questions Juliana's activities with her parents after delivering them the news that she fled to the Reich. Arnold reveals that Juliana met with the Man in the High Castle and shared a film that depicted a nuked San Francisco. Kido begins to leave and demands that the parents notify him the moment Juliana contacts them.
Trade Minister Tagomi is reprimanded by General Hidehisa Onoda after learning that he altered his plans to have enriched uranium delivered secretly onto public buses so as to prevent innocent people from being exposed to lethal radiation. Onoda has no regards for the endangered people as they are only American and threateningly orders Tagomi to retract the alteration and to never interfere. Tagomi reluctantly obliges and has no choice but to approve Onoda's wishes.
Joe Blake arrives in Berlin to reunite with his father, Reichminister Martin Heusmann, but is unenthusiastic to meet him. They continue their bonding at an evening party at his private residence. Joe is disappointed that he can't speak with his father alone as he busies himself with party officials. He is fed up with his father, as he can't forgive him for leaving his mother alone in America and dying impoverished. As Joe leaves, he gets to meet a filmmaker, Nicole Dörmer, who takes a liking to him.
Frank waits at a diner after deciding to meet up with a resistance member who contacted him. Surprisingly, the one who visits him, Sarah, is Japanese. She offers Frank a choice to help them prevent the Kempeitai carry out reprisals on a dozen innocent civilians after Juliana shot two soldiers dead during her escape. As the Kempeitai round up civilians to be executed, Frank drives Sarah to their destination. She poses as a hostage being held by Gary. As the Kempeitai busy themselves demanding her release, Lem ambushes them and Sarah finishes off another Kempeitai soldier. As Sarah tries to find the keys to the bus on the corpses, a Kempeitai officer manages to hold her at gunpoint. Gary is unable to rescue her in the risk of Sarah being shot, but Frank grabs a pistol and manages to shoot the officer from behind.
John invites Thomas on a fishing trip for just the two of them, seemingly to decide on euthanizing him. Afterwards, John meets Adler as he heads for work, who realizes that John has finally carried out the task. He invites him to enter his car to offer his condolences, reassuring him that his actions are justified. It is suddenly revealed, however, that John couldn't bear to go through with it, instead using the lethal injection on Adler. John leaves his body as he exits the car, preventing him from sending Thomas's diagnosis to his superiors.
At night, Tagomi holds the frame of his dead wife as he meditates. His assistant, Kotomichi, hears glass breaking from the office. When he enters, Tagomi has disappeared, the picture frame on the floor. Kotomich smiles as he seems to realize that Tagomi has traveled.
