Hawthorne Abendsen (born Abe Hawkes), also known as "The Man in the High Castle", is a mysterious character believed to have created the series of films known as The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, which shows alternate histories. He is not a member of the American Resistance, but they assist him as couriers for the films and provide him protection.
In the series finale, he later travels to another parallel universe, either to discover new parallel worlds or to find an alternate version of his deceased wife.

Hawthorne Abendsen was born Abe Hawkes. During World War II, he joined the Army Pictorial Service division of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and produced films of the battles in the Pacific. When the United States surrendered to the Greater Nazi Reich and Japanese Empire, Hawkes changed his name to Hawthorne Abendsen and settled in the Neutral Zone with his wife, Caroline.

While not appearing physically, Hawthorne Abendsen is referred to as "The Man in the High Castle". He is alluded to several times throughout the first season as the race to understand the films takes place.

Appearance & Personality[]
While at first glance Hawthorne seemingly appears as an eccentric man, he possesses a complex understanding of the nature of the films and the multiverse. He is shown to be a loving husband who is very protective of his wife, even resorting to seemingly working with the Nazis following their capture. He is also protective of Juliana, wanting her to understand her abilities and influencing her decisions.
